How Do We Deliver British Values
at Uphill Primary School
We believe that there are enduring values that all communities, societies and countries develop that support how people think, behave and demonstrate what people collectively value. The Department for Education requires schools to teach children the fundamental British Values, which are defined as:
* The rule of law
* Individual liberty
* Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
In order to embed these values in our school we have created a School Charter that establishes the basis for our high expectations for our school community’s way of working together, behaviours and self-regulation.
The School Charter is used within each class at the start of the academic year to set up classroom codes. This requires the children to think about what the School Charter means to them individually and within their class community and to then explain how they will construct a code that they agree and then links to our Behaviour Policy and general code of conduct. In this way, the children are enabled to exercise democratic behaviours and required to think about personal responsibility, self-regulation and peer support. They also negotiate how their class community will establish a ‘recognition and reward’ system based on responses to the School Charter and classroom codes.
Whole school assemblies regularly focus on the School Charter and the meanings behind the words so that children understand what it might look, feel and sound like when we ‘value differences and show respect for Everybody’. We hope that in this way, British Values are less ‘taught’ and more embedded through human communication and contact that lives these enduring human values.
