Mrs Lucy de Scossa – Learning Mentor

I would like to introduce myself. My role is Uphill school's Learning Mentor. I am trained as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), a mental health first-aider and part of the attendance team. I am also Team Teach trained and part of the school's safeguarding team.

My role as the Learning Mentor enables me to work with both children, parents and carers to reduce and ultimately remove any barriers to learning, enabling children to make the most of the opportunities available within the school and supporting them to reach their potential.

I develop trusting and positive relationships with children and parents that allow me to provide support both within school and at home. This may also involve signposting families to additional services of support that are available outside of school.

 

 

Some of the work I do with children includes:

  • Listening to/ discussing any worries they may have within school or at home and supporting them through life altering situations.
  • Discovering difficulties with attendance,
  • Challenges that arise when developing friendships or positive relationships with peers, including positive play and social skills.
  • Developing emotional literacy skills and supporting the children to understand the world around them.
  • Developing coping strategies and emotional management.
  • Strengthening low self-esteem, confidence and resilience.
  • Supporting them through high levels of anxiety.
  • Discovering barriers within a classroom environment which are affecting their learning.
  • Supporting pupils to follow the school behavior policy.
  • Supporting pupils to manage within school if they have traits of or have a special educational need.
