Year 6 Residential
While the Year 6's have been busy with SATs , the Year 5's have been busy learning stories, creating animations and performing mini plays. Take a look at some of their work.

We couldn't be prouder of our Year 6 children. They have approached and completed their SATs with courage, perseverance and determination. They are now looking forward to a well earned week at Charterhouse.

Term 5 - Maths Reasoning Support Session
A very big thank you to all the parents and children who came to our maths reasoning event after school today. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to work with your children in a fun and informative way. We were really impressed with the way your children challenged themselves and explained their thinking to you. Big Idea: Compare and Contrast
Our final project this year focuses on Ancient Civilisations. Each class will investigate a different civilisation that was around at a similar time 900AD. They will then compare their own civilisation with British history at that time as well as the other civilisations.

Project: Have we made it better?
Big Idea: Cause and Effect
This term we will be looking at inventors and inventions through the ages and examining the impact on life today. We began this project by looking at the top ten inventions of all time, championing one of them , then researching and creating an argument to convince others that our selected one had changed the way we lived the most. We were really impressed with the persuasive tactics shown by each team as they presented their ideas. We look forward to exploring this project further with the children and delving deeper into the impact of inventions we take for granted today. Our End of Project Presentation
We are really excited about our board games. We began by evaluating board games that were on the market e.g Monopoly, Frustration and Snakes and Ladders. We decided what we liked about them and what we would change before designing our own games. Inventions and Brunel inspired our games and we used our learning to help us create questions for our players to answer. We used real wood to make our games and painted them to make them appealing and desirable. We used drill and saws to make different parts like counters, spinners and dice. Inventors and their inventions...
On 6th March 2018, all of Year 5/6 shared their knowledge of an inventor by presenting to another class. This was a great opportunity to share what they have learnt and also explore other inventors that were researched in other classes. Altogether, the children have accumulated a wealth of biographies and reports on many inventors and inventions that have changed the world. These range from inventions involving communication, transport and every day inventions. Well done Year 5/6.
Unicorn's class assembly: Inventors Got Talent!
On Tuesday 27th February, the school hall was transformed into the production of Inventors Got Talent! Unicorn class presented many different inventors and their inventions to the school and shared some remarkable inventions that have changed the world. These inventors were then judged by a world famous judging panel made up of David Walliams, Simon Cowell, Albert Einstein and Ariana Grande.
All of the children did an absolutely brilliant job of researching inventors, writing and editing their speaking parts before today's performance. A lot of effort and practise from everyone in Unicorn. A huge well done to you all.
We have started to learn about Brunel and his amazing inventions. We looked at the Clifton Suspension Bridge and examined how it worked. We then built our own bridges to help us understand the forces at work - compression and tension. We then tested each of the bridges we made to see how much weight they could hold. Our most successful bridge held 900 kg of weight. We had to show lots of perseverance and resilience because some of the bridges took many attempts to build.
We have been enjoying the book Clockwork by Philip Pullman. The story is a dark tale with many twists and turns and centres on an apprentice ( Karl) who has to make a new figure for the town clock. Meanwhile Fritz the storyteller is relaying his latest tale to the townsfolk when all of sudden real life and fiction start to cross over. We have loved debating the plot and issues that have arisen from the story and the work we have produced has been fantastic.
Look at this fantastic picture of the Titanic drawn by Fred from Orion as part of work on the history of boats. The incredible detail makes it look 3D. Such care and determination shown - wonderful work.
Inventions through time
We made our own timelines of key inventions that have made a difference to life today. Each class then researched a different topic area: Orion looked at transport , Pegasus looked at communication and Unicorn looked at everyday inventions. All of the classes investigated the inventors related to their topic areas and wrote biographies about them. They used rubrics to build their skills of biography writing and this has resulted in some fabulous factual pieces of writing. We look forward to sharing what we have learned with the other classes.
Best inventions presentations
All three classes researched key inventions and then planned and delivered a persuasive presentation to convince the rest of the class that their invention was the most important. Reassuringly, most children voted for important, life saving inventions like penicillin.
The children had great fun learning to ice skate on Weston's indoor ring. We were so impressed with the determination and perseverance they showed to master this difficult skill. They also supported each other and worked together to ensure that everyone was successful. A fabulous time was had by all.

World War One Trail and Exhibition
The children in Years 5 and 6 have been working really hard to research and learn about World War One . As part of this work they have been researching the soldiers that lived in Uphill who went off to war and sadly lost their lives. On Friday 10th November, they will be commemorating these soldiers by holding an exhibition of their work at the Victory Hall and offering tours around the village to visit the soldiers homes and learn all about them. We would love to see you on the tour. Each tour will leave the Victory Hall at the following times:

Orion's Class Assembly
On the 7th November, Orion held their class assembly based on the causes and effects of World War One. The children confidently shared the work they had done in an interesting and informative manner. Well done Orion - it was a great reminder of the need to remember those soldiers who gave up their lives for our country.
Conditions in the Trenches
The children have been learning about the awful conditions that the soliders faced inside of the trenches. After researching each one they then had to rank them from the worst to the best using a "diamond nine" template, justifying their decisions and thoughts. As you can imagine, the discussion and debate around this was very interesting.
What was it like to be a soldier?
On Friday 29th September we were very lucky to have a visit from World War 1 expert Josh Cottrell. He bought with him a huge array of replica uniforms and weapons and spoke to us about what it was like to be in the trenches. He talked about life on the front and showed us some videos of the biggest battles. We were very fortunate because he also let us try on coats, hats and artillary belts. We each held a typical rucksack that many soldiers would have had to wear all day - it was very heavy and none of us could imagine wearing it for long. Josh was great at answering all our questions and we all learned a great deal.
We have been learning about why people wanted to join the army and examining some of the propaganda posters that encouraged them to do so. One of the most famous posters was designed by Alfred Leete in 1914 who lived in Weston Super Mare. After examining many different types, we then had a go at designing our own.
Introducing our Project
Our first project this year is entitled, " Whose Footsteps Do We Follow". This project looks at how life in Uphill was affected by both World Wars. During the first half term ( up until October) we are focusing on World War One, looking at the causes, conscription, life in the trenches and the battles fought. We will also be reading the book Private Peaceful to help us understand from a fictional point of view what life was like then.
To launch our project we worked with the Churches Conservation Trust to examine how Uphill has changed since the World War One. Each class visited the old church on the hill to hear not only about the history relating to it but also to look over the village and identify how Uphill would have looked during the war period. The children then designed stained glass windows in commemoration of something the soldiers would have missed about Uphill when they went off to war
Welcome to the New School Year
Welcome to 2017. We are really pleased with the way the children have settled into their new classes. We have had an exciting start to term
getting to know each other and exploring our starting theme of courage. As part of this theme the children learned poems which they then performed to other classes . They also produced some lovely artwork linked to it.
